Keep spiders away

A spider (Aranea), contrary to what most people think, is not an insect. Spiders belong to the class of arachnids, which officially includes scorpions, harvestmen, mites and ticks. There are a total of 35,000 spider species, but in the Netherlands itself there are about 650 different types. All spiders can be recognized by the fact that they have 8 legs. Spiders can be divided into web spiders and predatory spiders. Like bumblebees and bees, spiders are useful animals. They eat insects that can become a pest and thus keep the ecosystem in balance.

The problem of spiders

Multiple spiders in your home or business premises can certainly cause a nuisance. They weave countless cobwebs and this is often not a pretty sight and because of this, a space often does not appear clean and fresh. The creatures tend to soil windows and window frames with their droppings, so this can cause extra cleaning work. Incidentally, this doesn’t look neat either. Spiders like to live in warm, dark cracks or in the corners of walls or vents. Spiders are also a source of stress for many people, as they can cause anxiety. Protest Pest Control will be happy to provide you with advice on effective treatment for your home or business premises.

The spider: a well-known housemate

The spider: a familiar housemate. Most of the spiders you might encounter at home are the house spider, vibrating spider or basement spider. The vibrating spider does a quick dance when disturbed in its nest. Then there are the somewhat less appetizing-looking varieties, such as the wolf spider. This one is quite large, namely with a wingspan of almost 8 cm, hairy and sometimes people think it is a tarantula. Most spiders don’t bite people, but the pocket spider (pale yellow, gray or green in color) still sometimes does.

Spiders live on average about a year. A spider’s body consists of two parts and the head often has two probes and two strong jaws. In addition, a spider can have as many as 8 eyes! On the abdomen of a spider are the spider glands. The amniotic sac of the spider can sometimes carry thousands of eggs and these sacs are guarded by the female spiders. After the eggs hatch, the young are carried for a week on the backs of the female spiders and fed mouth to mouth by them. After this period, the young become more aggressive and are unable to stay together, so they often disperse thereafter.

Recognize the presence of spiders

Most people know that spiders, unlike other insects, have eight legs. For most people, the reaction to a spider ranges from indifference to quite intense feelings of fear.

How do the spiders get into spaces?

In spring and summer, spiders like to live outside and catch insects there. In autumn, because of the wind and rain, they prefer to come indoors and find a warm place for the winter.

To keep spiders from entering rooms, you can seal holes and cracks in the home or business. This can also be a good preventive measure for keeping other pests out of the home.
